Award-winning suspense writer Marcia Preston will be the speaker at the semi-annual Brown Bag Luncheon on October 17 at Donald W. Reynolds Community Center & Library, 1515 W. Main in Durant.
Her noon appearance is free, sponsored by the Friends of the Reynolds Library. Attendees are encouraged to bring sack lunches and eat during the presentation. The Friends will provide bottled water and cookies for all attendees.
Preston won both the Oklahoma Book Award and the Mary Higgins Clark award for suspense writing in 2004 for her novel “Song of the Bones.”
She was also nominated for the Mary Higgins Clark award in 2002.
Preston grew up on a wheat farm in central Oklahoma and now lives in Edmond. From her father she learned the art of storytelling; from her mother, a reverence for books; and from Oklahoma’s red earth, a love of wildlife and the outdoors.
Her first two novels were set in Oklahoma, mysteries that featured the daughter of a Gypsy mother and a redneck father named Chantalene Morrell.
She then moved to general fiction with the novels The Butterfly House, The Piano Man, Trudy’s Promise (a historical), and The Wind Comes Sweeping.
Preston earned both the B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Central Oklahoma, taught in public high schools, and worked as public relations and publications director for the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
She has freelanced for a wide variety of magazines and also edited and published ByLine, a trade magazine for aspiring writers.
Copies of Preston’s books will be for sale and autographing following her presentation.

Tawny the Bird: Who Would Rather Swim than Fly
by Linda Reed
In a highly entertaining, yet instructive debut intended for children, ages 6-7, Reed’s feisty Tawny, a determined young bird with the courage to follow her dreams, discovers her parents are her best source of support and guidance in the face of adversity. Parents and kids alike will enjoy Ms. Reed’s captivating storytelling as she inspires young minds to think outside-the-box.
Soul Shaken
by Shelly Ford
Written during the most difficult and tragic time of her life, Soul Shaken is the powerful and moving window into a mother’s soul. The words and feelings in this book are unedited and uncensored. What you will read is the pure reaction and emotion of a mother who is struggling to cope with, and understand the death of her 19 year old daughter. This is a topic that cannot be written about accurately by someone who has never experienced the loss of a child, but for someone who has suffered that kind of loss, the words ring truer than any others.
Book Signings
After traveling the world for fourteen years as an American Airlines flight attendant, Oklahoma author, basketball coach and Special Education teacher Linda Reed states, “The idea to help children think outside the box in order to achieve their goals and conquer any obstacles came to me early in my teaching career. It just took a few years for me to overcome my own challenges, one of which was obtaining an M.A. in Special Education. That’s why I love Tawny so much!”
Linda Reed has been sharing her special talents with students for over ten years now. Excited at finally launching her writing career, she looks forward to helping children reach their fullest potential through the art of storytelling for many years to come.
Come meet Linda on June 3rd & 7th in the library lobby where she will be doing book signings. She will also be a special guest at Story Time on Friday, June 3rd at 10:00am.
